SkyeFitness Squad Highlight: Shawn Laatsch

I'm the director of the Versant Power Astronomy Center at the University of Maine. I've been

involved in astronomy education and outreach since 1984 when I was a high school student. I'm passionate about sharing the night sky with people of all ages and cultures, and my facility has public programs, serves k-12 schools, university courses and more. I'm married to Kim Cooper and we enjoy traveling, especially to Italy. In my spare time I enjoy cooking, hiking, and exploring the great outdoors. I have two small dogs, Luna and Sirius who I consider my children.

1) Why did you choose in-studio personal training as opposed to the millions of free programs online?

I've always preferred in-person training as I find it to be more personalized and motivating. Having feedback is really key to advancing and progressing. The name Skye Fitness also seemed so appropriate for someone who is into astronomy!

2) What has been your greatest achievement since you've been working out?

Losing some weight and gaining back some strength and having more energy.

3) What advice would you give someone who is ready to start working out?

Just do it! Everyone starts somewhere, and the journey is a great one!

4) What is a fun fact about you we may not know?

I was an officer in the International Planetarium Society and has traveled to 28 countries.
